Going for more than a paycheck.

Posted by MSLO Blogger

Part of managing your career is looking beyond your next paycheck. Right now I realize that a lot of people are focused on just getting a job. That’s fine. But what excites me are the people looking more than one step ahead.

  • The ones that see this economic shake-up as a chance for true career reinvention.
  • The ones who’ve planned and have resources to invest in themselves and their career goals.

These people are the most fun for me to work with because they are looking to create something better than what they have now and they are experiencing miraculous results.

Take my client Nancy. Nancy proactively resigned from her demanding marketing job to explore her passion for photography and food. Because of her solid performance she negotiated a month of severance and invested in career coaching. Taking this step back allowed Nancy to explore new opportunities including working at a start up gourmet food store. Now Nancy gets paid to use her marketing skills in an area of true passion. She also has time build her photography skills and credentials on the side. In her own words, Nancy says she feels “totally excited” about her future and as if she’s finally putting herself on a path that feels fun and makes her happy.

Perhaps you’re ready to invest in your career for long-term happiness and prosperity. That’s what my show, "Making a Living" is all about. Tune in Wednesdays at 4 pm EST/1 pm PST and I’ll help you get excited about your future too!

  • Great topic - another tip is to be a step ahead of trends...even half a step ahead. Keeping a pulse on new but trending technologies (like Twitter was last year) gives you a total edge.
These days, esp in the food world, you have to embrace all forms of media - not just online or print or tv. I can't tell you how many traditional journalist (who only focused on their one "thing") have lost their jobs are now scrambling to find a foothold in the new media world (blogs, facebook, twitter)
And to the successful...media is just media. There's no distinction btw online and offline other than delivery method.
