Laud means “to praise.” But the word comes from a much deeper form of praise. Capitalize the L and add an S, and you have Lauds, one of Christianity's formal prayer services. Lauds is technically not one of the canonical hours, since only Psalms 148 to 150 are read. But all three offer high praise to God. Lauds is properly coupled with Matins, the Morning Prayer service.
