Just about every one of us has a bottle of vodka or 2 stuck way back in the liquor cabinet. It's a versatile and relatively inexpensive spirit that seems to have been a bit ignored in the cocktail world these days. Today Allen Katz reminds us why you have that bottle in the first place, and helps to make sure that it never goes to waste again!

Barbara,
Simple syrup is a basic concoction of sugar and water that's used to sweeten things like cocktails. It's more convenient that using sugar because you don't have to wait for the sugar to disolve, or risk your drink being grainy from the sugar. Here's one of Martha's basic recipes for simple syrup: http://www.marthastewart.com/article/simple-syrup
I also like using it in home made lemonade and iced tea!
