Earth is the fifth-largest planet but is No. 3 in proximity to the sun. You’ve heard that Earth is unique among the planets because human life thrives on it. But it also stands out because of its name. The other planets have mythological names dating to ancient Greece, such as Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter. Earth, on the other hand, comes from the ground up. We still use earth as a synonym for soil. The capital E is retained only when referring to the planet, usually in an astrological context.
