Bottling Day and a Sandwich

Posted by

Every Wednesday is sandwich day on Everyday Food radio and I come up with a new sandwich to share with our listeners. Sometimes, no matter what the day,  you just need a sandwich.  And bottling day at Zahtila Vineyards in Calistoga, CA, was one of those days.  For Laura Zahtila, owner and proprietor, the day entails bottling and packing the wine, and feeding the hard working crew. Laura enlisted her friend Maureen Ludwig to do the cooking. Maureen, an avid listener of Everyday Food radio has made many a sandwich for past bottling days and was looking for something new. She e-mailed me, we kicked around some ideas, and together came up with a beef and caramelized onion sandwich. Maureen decided to load the meat, onions, and a fresh green salsa onto crisp pugliese bread (think crusty Italian bread with a moist crumb) and despite the rain and hard work, the crew was well fed and happy.

  • We hope to see you in Calistoga for next year's bottling day, Sandy! Maybe you can bring some easst coast sun to with you! Mo

  • Wow that sandwich sure sounds deeee-lish!!! Too bad I
missed this year's bottling but fortunately Mo is my niece so I'll get the recipe from her and have it with a nice bottle of Zahtila Cab that's been in my wine cabinet since I was out there to help with the bottling last year. Rest assured I'll be tuning in to "Sandwich Wednesday" from now on.
