Being a huge fan of pork, pickles, Martin's Potato Rolls, brisket, and cole slaw, I look forward to the annual Big Apple BBQ Block Party like some people await their birthdays or Christmas. So in spite of yesterday's rain here in New York City, I headed for the smokers to get a taste of this year's offerings from the likes of Mike Mills, Jim and Nick's, Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint, Blue Smoke, Big Bob Gibson's, Moonlite Bar-B-Q, and Hill Country. 3 Homemade Smoked Sausage with Pimento Cheese and Saltines from Jim and Nick's of Birmingham, AL
4 Mike Mills brought back his legendary BBQ sauce fountain. Coming soon to a wedding reception near you?
5 Western Tennessee-Style Whole Hog Sandwich with Pickles and Cole Slaw from Patrick Martin of Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint in Nashville, TN
6 Pulled Pork Shoulder and Cole Slaw from Chris Lilly of Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q in Decatur, AL (Notice their signature white BBQ sauce, which is usually meant for chicken but tastes good on pork, too!)
7 Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn of Owensboro, KY handed out free samples of their slow cooked mutton (a.k.a. sheep).
8 Moonlite's BBQ Mutton and Burgoo, a meat and vegetable stew, was a surprise favorite of mine.
9 Beef Brisket with Pickles from NYC's Hill Country
10 An afternoon rainshower wasn't enough to keep thousands of New Yorkers from chowing down at the BBQ Party, but it did inspire some huddled masses to form under every available tent.
