Word of the Day: float

Posted by

Lie on your back on a raft in the pool, and you can float there in the comfort for a few hours. Actually, in Old English, float was the water itself. Consider the relationship between float and water when you think of the words flood and flow. There are also floats on a parade and ideas that get floated around the office. Or you can cool off by tossing a scoop of ice cream in your glass of soda. The ice cream may sink to the bottom of the glass, but you can still call the drink a float.
