Holiday Decorating Tips from Kevin Sharkey

Posted by

Kevin Sharkey, executive editorial director for decorating at Martha Stewart Living, joined Mario on “Living Today” to offer us a few decorating strategies for the holidays. When it comes to Christmas trees, Kevin prefers an artificial tree because he travels so much during the holidays and caring for a “live” tree is not an option (photos of Kevin's tree). Kevin also buys premade wreaths (Atlas Cedar and Blue Spruce wreaths) and adds ribbon bows and embellishments like small ornaments to create a custom look. Below are some of Kevin's helpful holiday tips.

Hanging, Lighting, and Protecting
When it comes time to hang your wreath, garlands, and other holiday decorations, Kevin recommends using a variety of 3M brand removable hangers. You can find the hangers at Home DepotCommand, and many other hardware stores.

What would the holidays be without the warm glow of candles? Kevin prefers to use flameless candles from which are safe to use around pets, children, and visitors plus they look like the real thing!

Lastly, Kevin uses bobeches from Cape Candle under taper candles to collect dripping wax and EZ Glides (found at EZ Glides) under holiday decorations like glittered reindeer. The glides protect surfaces from scratches and keeps them in place.

  • Can you please let me know where you purchased the silver bells on the wreath you made for your party. I saw it in the December issue.

  • Kevin,
Where did you find your reindeer herd? I saw it in the holiday issue.
