In 1919, the 18th amendment was passed, outlawing alcohol "for beverage purposes" from the United States. On December 5, 1933 the 21st amendment repealed the 18th. Today, 78 years later, we celebrate with some classic pre-prohibition cocktails from Allen Katz.
Fancy Whiskey Cocktail
2 oz Old Overholt Rye
½ tsp Combier Royale
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1 tsp simple syrup
Squeeze lemon peel; fill one-third with ice, and stir with a spoon. Strain in a fancy wine glass, twist a piece of lemon peel over the top, moisten the rim of the glass with it and throw it in.
Pink Lady
1 1/2 oz Dorothy Parker - American Gin
1 Egg White
3/4 oz Real Grenadine
Shake ingredients over ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Maple Leaf
3/4 oz Canadian Whiskey
3/4 oz Maple Syrup
3/4 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
Shake ingredients over ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Star
1oz French Vermouth
1 oz Applejack
Dash of Curacao
Dash of Angostura Bitters
Stir with cracked ice. Stain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a maraschino cherry.
